Karl Hofmann was a law student in Munich. In 1869 he was instrumental in founding the German Alpine Club . Together with the Prague alpinist Johann Stüdl and the guides Josef Schnell and Thomas Groder, he carried out many important mountain tours, especially in the Glockner group in Austria. Among his first ascents were the Hochgall (August 3, 1868), the Schneewinkelkopf (September 14, 1869) and the Hohe Riffl (September 15, 1869). On September 18, 1869, he was able to record three first ascent in one day with the Klockerin , the Großer Bärenkopf and the Hinteren Bratschenkopf .

Karl Hofmann became particularly famous for his discovery of a direct route between the Pasterze and the Adlersruhe on the Großglockner, without the detour via the Leitertal and the Salmhütte . On August 5, 1869, the day the newly built via ferrata over the Stüdlgrat , financed by his friend Stüdl , he discovered the path through the glacier break, which for many decades became the most popular ascent to the Grossglockner. Both the way ( Hofmannsweg ) and the glacier ( Hofmannskees ) were named after Karl Hofmann. The Hofmannshütte, which has now been demolished, and the Hofmannsturm in the Glocknerwand also bear his name.

In 1870 Karl Hofmann fell in the battle of Sedan .
