The Hofmannshütte was an alpine refuge in the Glockner Group in Carinthia in the Hohe Tauern National Park. It belonged to the Academic Section Vienna of the Austrian Alpine Association , had been out of order in 2005 due to dilapidation and was demolished and the area renatured in summer 2016 on behalf of the PES. Due to the rapid melting of the Pasterze in the past decades and the opening up of the Franz-Josefs-Höhe for mass tourism, it had lost its alpine importance - especially as a base for the Großglockner climb.

Location and ways

The Hofmannshütte was located above the Pasterze near the Franz-Josefs-Höhe at 2,444  m above sea level. A.

The ascent took 45 minutes from Franz-Josefs-Höhe ( 2363  m ) via the marked Gamsgrubenweg . The path continues to the Oberwalderhütte at 2972  m . The Hofmannshütte was the starting point for the ascent to the Großglockner via the Hofmannskees until it was closed .

history

The Hofmannshütte was named after the German mountaineer Karl Hofmann (1847-1870). It developed into one of the most popular starting points for alpine tours on the Großglockner and other three-thousand-meter peaks in the Glockner group.

Archduke Johann suggested building the first hut as early as 1834 . The hut originally consisted of just one room and fell into disrepair over time. Johann Stüdl and Hofmann rebuilt the hut in 1869 at their own expense. In 1871 the name was changed to Hofmann-Hütte by the DuOeAV in Salzburg. The hut was renovated for the first time in 1887 by the Prague Section , which then donated the hut to the Vienna Academic Section in 1910. Several extensions followed, in 1953 and from 1969 to 1982. As early as 1998, the hut was operating solar heat collectors and a bio sewage treatment plant.

In the last two decades, the structural condition of the hut has deteriorated more and more, so that in 2006 it was decided to demolish it. Reasons for the demolition decision were, among other things, the rotten building structure, as the hut was made of wood, and the spread of mold in the interior. After the demolition, which was already decided in 2006, the plan was to build a new refuge at the former location, although at that time it was still uncertain whether the high costs of 3 million euros.

In mid-August 2013, the Austrian Alpine Association submitted an application to the mayor of Heiligenblut for this, the oldest hut, to be demolished without a new building. Since all parts have to be brought out of the Hohe Tauern National Park , costs of at least € 100,000 are expected. If the hut is razed, there will be no more new buildings in the special protection area of the Gamsgruabn , said Mayor Sepp Schachner. The decision of the Alpine Club was made even though the state of Carinthia, the municipality of Heiligenblut and the Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG had paid certain shares in the renovation, but it would make no sense in terms of mountaineering due to the lack of demand. On the one hand, the hut is close to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe , which can be reached by car ; On the other hand, however, the Hofmannsweg, the former normal route to the summit of the Großglockner , which leads from the Hofmannshütte via the Pasterze and Hofmannskees to the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte , can no longer be used for tourists due to the risk of falling rocks and the hut was thus cut off from the flow of tourists.

The hut was demolished in September 2016 and the area is being renatured .
