The Oberwalderhütte is an alpine refuge of the Alpenverein Austria in the ÖAV .
The first category hut is located in the eastern Glockner group at an altitude of 2973 m on the summit of the Großer Burgstall, a rocky knoll in the glacier landscape of the Pasterze . Outside of the hut's management hours, a winter room is available, which is accessible via an AV lock, for which members of the Alpine clubs receive a key from their section for a nominal fee.
history
The hut was opened on August 15, 1910 and is named after Thomas Oberwalder, who financed the construction of the hut and was buried in an avalanche on the Pasterze in 1906. It was last modernized from 1982 to 1985. In cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology, a shell-shaped thermal protection concept was implemented, which should guarantee frost protection in the innermost shell even in winter without heating. The mountain schools of the German Alpine Association and the ÖAV use the hut as a base for alpine training courses.
