The Salmhütte , also: Salmshütte , is a refuge of the Austrian Alpine Club in the Glockner Group at 2644  m above sea level. A. (or 2638  m above sea level according to ÖK 50 ).

It is located in the upper Leitertal at the Hasenpalfen on the southeast side of the Großglockner . The first category hut is supplied by helicopter, there is no material ropeway.

history

The first hut was built in 1799 as part of an effort to climb the Großglockner for the first time. The construction work was financed by Prince-Bishop Franz Xaver von Salm-Reifferscheidt . This building was the first alpine refuge in the Eastern Alps . The accommodation was completely destroyed by looting and finally by moraine thrust. In 1829 it was replaced by a stone building.

The second Salmhütte, built by the Klagenfurt Section, was north of the first building at 2,805 meters above sea level on the slope of the Schwerteck and was opened (after construction began in 1881) on August 16, 1883 by Anton Dolar, the father of the Glocknerhaus . The accommodation consisted of a room blasted into the rock, which was divided into two areas by a wall: the first contained a stove and six flatbeds for mountain guides , the second six beds for tourists.

In 1926 and 1927, the Vienna Section built the third Salmhütte as a multi-storey natural stone building near the old dilapidated hut . The house was fully managed from July 1, 1928 (floor space for 40 visitors), but was not officially opened until July 7, 1929.

In 2017, a wooden extension was built on the north side (opening on June 30, 2018), which primarily houses the new kitchen and a "service apartment" on the upper floor.

Approaches

  • From the Lucknerhaus ( 1918  m ), which can be reached by car from Kals am Großglockner , an ascent takes about two hours to the Glorerhütte in Bergertörl and from there to the Salmhütte in another hour.
  • From the Glocknerhaus ( 2132  m ), which can be reached via the Großglockner High Alpine Road , a path leads down to the Margaritzen reservoir, crosses the crests of the two dams and then climbs to the Stockerscharte ( 2501  m ). From there, the path as part of the Wiener Höhenweg leads only slightly uphill above the Leitertal to the hut. The total walking time is about three hours.

Tours

The Salmhütte is a less frequented alternative to the Stüdlhütte and Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte for climbing the Großglockner. The ascent leads from the hut over the Hohenwartscharte ( 3183  m ) in about 3½ hours to the Adlersruhe with the Erzherzog-Johann hut and from there on via the normal route to the summit ( 3798  m ).

The hut is also suitable as a variant on the descent from the Großglockner, as not only Kals am Großglockner , but also the Franz-Josefs-Höhe and Heiligenblut can be easily reached from here.

For hikers there are transitions over the Pfortscharte to the Stüdlhütte and over the already mentioned Stockerscharte to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe, the former Hofmannshütte and Oberwalderhütte . It is also a base on the Wiener Höhenweg , which leads from the Glocknerhaus over the Stockerscharte to Iselsberg in the Schobergruppe.
