Anton Paul Heilmann (born May 30, 1850 in Neumarkt am Wallersee , Austrian Empire , † July 21, 1912 in Mödling , Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian academic painter and illustrator . He is best known for his watercolors and drawings of alpine landscapes.

Life

Self-portrait by the sea , hand-drawn postcard by "Onkel Heilmann" (1903)

Anton Paul Heilmann was born in Salzburg Flachgau in 1850 . The Thieme-Becker and some secondary sources give falsely 1830 as year of birth. Few biographical details are known from his life. His father Anton Heilmann was a kk Finanzwach supervisor and son of a supervisor in Bad Ischl . Mother Julia Anna (née Frauenlob) also came from a family of civil servants. The family lived in the so-called Glasererhaus, which housed the Neumarkt gendarmerie post. Heilmann's talent as a painter was probably evident at a young age. One of his first works, Vögel am Feigenbaum , was created in 1864 and is countersigned by a certain custodian Anton Ziegler, who may have been a teacher or examiner with him. The location of Linz indicates where he lived or where he was trained at the time. Heilmann later attended the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Friedrich Sturm and studied landscape painting under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels at the Vienna Academy . As a result, the court theater painters Brioschi , Burghart and Kautsky worked in the studio and worked as a decorative painter for various exhibitions.

The motifs of his works reveal various journeys through the countries of the monarchy . Drawings from Banat , Dalmatia , Friuli , Istria , Moravia and Trentino are known. At the age of 18 he was already out and about in the Salzkammergut , as shown by sketches from Ischl and Hallstatt . In 1882 he probably married his wife Betty, as a note “On the honeymoon” on a colored pencil drawing from that year suggests. From text contributions by Heilmann, for example for the German and Austrian Alpine Club , it can be seen that he also undertook challenging mountain tours with guides and made sketches and drawings as well as watercolors on site. After living in Vienna for a long time , he spent his last years in Mödling , where he was also a committee member of the Alpine Club section. In 1912, at the age of 62, he died unexpectedly of a stroke , according to obituaries .

Anton Paul Heilmann left a thematically very varied work. While he mainly made large-format decorative paintings and oil paintings at a young age , he soon turned to small-format watercolors and drawings . He put his focus on landscape painting , with particular emphasis on the representation of mountain landscapes. He also painted hunting scenes as well as general and detailed views of towns and villages as well as of castles and alpine huts. In addition, he acted as a "photo reporter" for some of the highest-circulation magazines, including the Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung . The quality of his watercolors is explicitly mentioned in artists' encyclopedias, which compare him to other painters of the time such as Edward Theodore Compton , Tony Grubhofer and Zeno Diemer . Self-drawn postcards , which he sent to a certain Rosina Seyrl at Starhemberg Castle , he signed with “Uncle Heilmann”.

Numerous pictures were created on behalf of members of the imperial family . Johann II of Liechtenstein was a collector of his works . Many of his commissioned works ended up in the possession of the City of Vienna or in the archives of the publishers and associations for which they were made. Heilmann's extensive artistic estate probably came onto the market around 1975. Since then, his watercolors and drawings, and more rarely oil paintings, have repeatedly appeared at auctions . Most of his works are therefore in private collections, a few in the possession of the Salzburg Museum (SMCA) and three watercolors in the Schubert Museum in Vienna.
