Peltaria emarginata is a species ofthe cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). This species of plant is endemic to Greece.

description

Peltaria emarginata grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of up to 50 cm. The stem is erect. The leaves of the basal rosette are oblong spatulate and sparsely hairy. The stem leaves are much smaller, sessile and have entire margins.

The flowering period extends from May to June. The hermaphrodite, four-fold flowers are grouped together in a racemose inflorescence . The four white petals are about 3 mm long. The flat, disc-shaped pods are deeply notched and the ripe pods are (indistinctly) veined in a reticulate manner.

Chromosome number

Peltaria emarginata has the same number of chromosomes as Bornmuellera species (2n = 16). Therefore, hybrids with Bornmuellera baldacii and Bornmuellera tymphaea often form .

Occurrence

Peltaria emarginata is in northern and central Greece and on the island of Evia endemic . It only grows on serpentine at altitudes between 300 and 2100 meters on rocky slopes, stony pastures and pine forest.

ecology

Numerous studies deal with the remarkable property that Peltaria emarginata accumulates nickel very strongly in roots and leaves. The nickel concentration in dried leaves often exceeds 1% of the dry matter.

Systematics

The species was first described by Pierre Edmond Boissier in 1842 as Ptilotrichum emarginatum , then in 1893 Heinrich Carl Haussknecht placed it in the genus Peltaria .
