Heinrich Carl Haussknecht

Heinrich Carl Haussknecht (born November 30, 1838 in Bennungen ; † July 7, 1903 in Weimar ) was a German pharmacist and botanist . His botanical author abbreviation is " Hausskn. ".

Life

Haussknecht was a pharmacist by profession and had been an assistant in Bremgarten, Canton Aargau, and Aigle, Canton Vaud since 1857. He dealt with the flora of the Swiss Alps and got to know Pierre Edmond Boissier .

Haussknecht studied botany and pharmacy at the University of Breslau . In 1864 he finished his studies with the state examination. He then led a trip from 1864 to 1869 via Eastern Anatolia, Kurdistan and Luristan through Persia and the Persian Gulf. He discovered and mapped antiquities and put on botanical collections.

In 1882 he was a co-founder of the Thuringian Botanical Association . He was a corresponding member of the Thuringian-Saxon Association for Geography. In 1885 he traveled to northern Greece with Theodor von Heldreich .

On October 18, 1896, he founded the Haussknecht herbarium . It was initially located in Weimar and is now part of the Institute for Special Botany at the University of Jena .

Honors

In 1889 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

The genus Haussknechtia Boiss. in the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) has been named in his honor.
