Werner Nahm (2004)

Werner Nahm (born March 21, 1949 in Münster (Selters) ) is a German physicist and university lecturer . He mainly deals with mathematical questions in the field of theoretical physics .

life and work

Werner Nahm was a student at the Philippinum Weilburg high school . After graduating from high school, he studied from 1966 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he obtained his diploma in physics in 1970. He received his doctorate in 1972 at the University of Bonn ( Analytical solution of the statistical bootstrap model ), where he was then a post-doctoral student until 1975 . From 1976 to 1982 he was a scientist at CERN . From 1982 he was back at the University of Bonn as a Heisenberg fellow. In 1986 he became an Associate Professor at the University of California, Davis . From 1989 to 2002 he was a full professor at the University of Bonn. Since 2002 he has been Senior Professor at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and Director of the School of Theoretical Physics there . He is an "External Scientific Member" at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn.

In the 1970s he dealt with elementary particle theory, for example bootstrap models (the subject of his dissertation) and the classification of graded Lie algebras, which are important in supersymmetric theories. After that he mainly worked on the theory of magnetic monopoles, classification of supersymmetric models, conformal field theories and their algebraic classification and classification of string models . Nahm equations (1981) are named after him, systems of matrix differential equations in the complex, for example for the description of monopoles in Yang-Mills theories , and the Nahm transformation.

In 1978 he proved that the maximum dimension of supersymmetric theories is d = 11. The d = 11 supergravity theory predicted by him was constructed a little later by Eugène Cremmer , Bernard Julia and Joël Scherk . Since supersymmetric theories are favored today within the framework of Kaluza-Klein theories as candidates for unified field theories of elementary particles ( M-theory ), Nahm has also determined the maximum number of space-time dimensions that can be used for this.

He also did research on the Maya civilization and its astronomy, for example the role of Venus (and its phases) in relation to calendar prognoses , which was important for them for planning wars. In his Mayan research he also worked with Linda Schele and Nikolai Grube and participated in the ongoing deciphering work of Mayan hieroglyphs. He also found references to supernova events and the observation of Mercury in the Mayan scriptures.

His doctoral students include Katrin Wendland , Katrin Becker and Melanie Becker .
