Katrin Wendland (born July 18, 1970 in Berlin ) is a German mathematician and mathematical physicist who deals with geometric aspects of string theory.

Life

Wendland received her diploma in mathematics at the University of Bonn under Werner Müller ( Ray-Singer Analytic Torsion, Quillenmetric and Regularized Determinants ) in 1996 and received her doctorate in theoretical physics under Werner Nahm in 2000 ( Moduli spaces of unitary conformal field theories ). As a post-doctoral student , she was with Louise Dolan at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . From 2002 she was a lecturer at the University of Warwick . From 2006 to 2011 she was Professor of Analysis and Geometry at the University of Augsburg , and from 2007 Managing Director of the Mathematics Institute there. In 2011 she moved to the department for pure mathematics at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where she works in the working group for mathematical physics.

In her dissertation ( Moduli spaces of unitary conformal field theories ) she dealt with the connection between the modular spaces of unitary conformal field theories and K3 surfaces in algebraic geometry.

In 2018 she gave the Gauss lecture . In 2010 she was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad ( On the geometry of singularities in quantum field theories ). Since 2009 she has been on the executive committee of the German Mathematicians Association . She is also a member of the London Mathematical Society , a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz (2013) and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (2013). In 2009 she received a Starting Independent Researcher Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for research on the geometry of topological quantum field theories (TQFT) and in 2009 she received the Bavarian European Medal .
