Pema Khandu (born August 21, 1979 in Gyangkar, Tawang District , Arunachal Pradesh , India ) is an Indian politician. He has been Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh since July 17, 2016 .

biography

Pema Khandu was born as the eldest son of Dorjee Khandu in a small village in the far west of today's Arunachal Pradesh, near the border with Bhutan . The family belongs to the Tibetan-Burmese ethnic group of the Monpa and belongs to the Buddhist religious community. His father was active for many years in the local organization of the Congress Party in Arunachal Pradesh and was Chief Minister of the state from 2007 to 2011. He was killed in a helicopter crash on April 30, 2011. The son graduated from the Hindu College of the University of Delhi and joined the Congress Party in 2000, where he rose rapidly, becoming Secretary of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee in 2005 and President of the Tawang District Congress Committee in 2010 . In the government of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki , he became Minister of Agriculture and Tourism on May 20, 2011 and later Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Art and Culture. In the second government under Nabam Tuki after the parliamentary elections in Arunachal Pradesh, Khandu was Minister for Urban Development. In December 2015 there was an internal revolt in the Congress Party against Chief Minister Tuki, which ultimately led to the state being placed under president's rule for a short time and then the leader of the rebel faction Kalikho Pul succeeding the chief minister. Pema Khandu was one of the "party rebels". However, the events were declared illegal by the Supreme Court of India . Tuki was again Chief Minister for a few days. Since he could not achieve a majority in parliament, the Congress Party faction (which the dissidents had rejoined in the meantime) elected Pema Khandu as their candidate for the office of Chief Minister as a compromise candidate. When he was sworn in on July 17, 2016, at the age of 37, he was the youngest of the 29 Chief Ministers in India .

Pema Khandu is married and has two sons and a daughter. His hobbies include traveling and various sports ( cricket , football , badminton , volleyball ).
