Dorjee Khandu (born March 3, 1955 in the village of Gyangkhar, Tawang , Arunachal Pradesh ; † April 30, 2011 in a helicopter crash near the village of Sela Pass, Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) and most recently from 2007 until his death Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.

Life

Participation in the Bangladesh war and minister in Arunachal Pradesh

Khandu came from a simple Buddhist family from the indigenous people of Monba . After receiving little formal schooling, he took part in the 1971 Bangladesh war at the age of 16 and worked for a total of seven years in the military intelligence service of the Indian armed forces . He was honored for his outstanding services and bravery during the Bangladesh war.

In 1980 he became a member of the Anchal Amiti organization for the first time and was involved in the remote villages of the mountainous state , particularly in his home district of Tawang for the construction of water supply and communication facilities, electricity supply and school buildings. In addition, on his initiative, cultural and cooperative societies were founded in Tawang. A cultural group he led took part in the ASIAD cultural program of the Asian Games in New Delhi in 1982 and won a silver medal there.

His actual political career began in 1983 when he was elected unopposed Vice President of the District Council ( Zilla Parishad ) in the West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh and held this position until 1987. Also unopposed, he was first elected a member of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (the state parliament) in March 1990 in the Mukto constituency.

After his re-election in March 1995, he was also appointed Minister of State for Cooperation by the then Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Gegong Apang before he was appointed to the Cabinet as Minister for Livestock, Veterinary Services and Dairy Development. Between 1998 and 2006, after a government reshuffle, he took over the office of energy minister in the Apang cabinet and was re-elected to parliament in 1999. He was also Minister for Mines, Welfare and Rehabilitation and Crisis Management.

Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh

His commitment to the benefit of the rural population ultimately contributed to his successor to Gegong Apang as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on April 9, 2007, against whom he had previously led an internal revolt.

After the leadership of the Congress Party had initially rejected his successor, he went with most of the members of the INC in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly to a protest march to New Delhi, which led to the leadership of the Indian National Congress accepting his successor for ten days .

After taking the oath of office on April 9, he promised to reopen the state-owned APEX Cooperative Bank, with 32 branches nationwide, after it had ceased operations two years earlier due to a loan fraud of 200 crore (2 billion) rupees . Within a few weeks he was able to provide a loan of 225 crore rupees and an investment commitment from the energy group National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), so that the reopening of the bank was made possible and the compensation of small investors, who mainly came from the poorer sections of the population could begin.

His popularity continued to grow when he requested the opening of the regional federal police office in Itanagar to conduct basic investigations into theft of state property.

In 2009 he was again elected to the state parliament without opposing candidates and was confirmed on October 25, 2009 for a second term as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. The special payment of 24,000 crore rupees to the state, announced by the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on January 31, 2010, made Khandu's popularity grow again.

Dorjee Khandu was killed in a helicopter crash on April 30, 2011 . The helicopter with Khandu and four other people on board went missing on the way from Tawang to Itanagar. Four days later, its debris was found in the mountains of Tawang District. Dorjee Khandu's successor as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh was Jarbom Gamlin .

Dorjee Khandu's eldest son, Pema Khandu , had also been active in the Congress Party since 2000 and was a minister in the government of Arunachal Pradesh from 2011. On July 17, 2016, he was elected Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh after lengthy internal party disputes.
