The venue is the building of the Design Department of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Armgartstrasse. The program of the summer academy is aimed at professional artists, designers, art and design students and self-taught people from all over the world who want to engage artistically. When registering, participants must prove their artistic qualifications using working examples. However, rejections are rare.

history

The summer academy was founded in 1988 by Erhard Göttlicher , draftsman and professor for drawing at the HAW Hamburg. Seven courses were held for the first time, supported by Manuel von Klipstein as managing director. From 1988 to 1992 the number of courses doubled. In 1993 Pentiment became a permanent institution of the HAW Hamburg. In 1994, Eun Nim Ro, painter and professor for painting at the Design Department at HAW Hamburg, took over the artistic direction of Pentiments. After her retirement in 2010, Jan Köchermann became the artistic director of Pentiments. For legal and financial reasons, HAW Hamburg stopped funding Pentiments in 2014. The summer academy then repositioned itself in 2015 as a non-profit association »Pentiment - International Summer Academy for Art and Design eV«.
