Penumbra was a French gothic metal band.

history

In 1996 Jarlaath ( singer and oboist ) and Dorian ( guitarist ) met at a concert and found that they had the same basic views on music. Both agreed that there were too many bands with a similar sound and too few that used classical elements. Shortly after their first rehearsals together with a synthesizer and a soprano , they both left their previous groups to form a band called Imperatoria .

This broke up in November 1996. Jarlaath then founded the band Penumbra , which Dorian and four other musicians, including Mr. Rikk ( drums ), immediately joined. When they first performed at the St. Denis University Festival in 1997, the new formation was well received. Shortly thereafter, she received an offer to play with the French metal band Misanthrope . In the same year, the first demo album, Falling Into My Soul, was released .

Two sopranos and a baritone were hired to record the album Emanate , but the Penumbra soon left. Concerts were given in France and Switzerland with changing cast. At the Wave-Gotik-Treffen 1999, Penumbra was the only French band to play.

After an extensive line-up change, The Last Bewitchment was recorded in 2001. After the release by Season of Mist , Penumbra played with Within Temptation and After Forever in France and the Netherlands.

In 2003, some members left the band after the recordings for Seclusion . After a replacement was found, the band played concerts all over Europe with Apocalyptica , Moonspell , Epica and again in 2005 at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig.

In 2009, Penumbra disbanded.

style

The group combined high female vocals with typical Death Metal heaviness and classical influences.
