Per Hallström

Per August Leonard Hallström (born September 29, 1866 in Stockholm , † February 18, 1960 in Nacka ) was a Swedish writer , translator and engineer .

Life

Per Hallström was born as the son of the cashier Conrad Hallström and his wife Johanna, geb. Andersson was born in Stockholm in 1866. In 1883 he passed his high school diploma and began studying engineering at the Technical University (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan) in Stockholm, where he graduated as an engineer in 1886. His first collection of poems, “Lyrik och fantasier”, appeared in 1891, and his first novel, “Spring Autoris” (original title: “Våren”) was published in German by Inselverlag Leipzig in 1903 . From 1908 to 1960 he occupied chair No. 14 of the Svenska Academies , of which he was permanent secretary from 1931 to 1941. He was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature , but turned it down in advance. In 1929 he won the Samfundet De Nio Grand Prix .

Services

In addition to his work as a writer, he also made a living as a translator and translated all of Shakespeare's works into Swedish.

In literary terms, he is counted among the storytellers of the 1890s in Sweden, although his career extended well into the 20th century. In the German-speaking countries he was one of the most important Nordic poets alongside Henrik Ibsen and Knut Hamsun .
