Percolator

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Percolator is the title of a rock 'n' roll song sung by Randy Randolph from 1958, which did not become famous in its country of origin, the USA , but only in a German version.

History of origin

In the text, composer Jack Morrow describes a protagonist who buys a percolator to keep the coffee warm because he doesn't even have a coffee pot . He even misses a rendezvous with his lover to heat the coffee . In the second stanza he is sorry, but he sees no way out because he is addicted to coffee ("coffee sot"). The text closes with the assurance that they will get married sometime and then open a café. The song was composed on September 8, 1958 in the RCA Victor recording studios in Nashville with the line- up: Boots Randolph (saxophone), James "Spider" Rich / James L. Wilkerson (guitar), Bob Moore (bass), Floyd Cramer (piano) and Buddy Harman (drums). Randolph, Moore, Cramer and Harman were part of the core of the Nashville A-Team , which acted as studio musicians for most of the country music productions in Nashville . The music producer was the famous Chet Atkins . The recording is one of the first stereo recordings in popular music.

Randy Randolph - Percolator (1958)

melody

The song was composed and written by Jack Morrow , singer Randy Randolph takes on the saxophone part. The song begins (and ends) with a characteristic riff , which is taken over in unison by the other instruments , the drums also play the syncopation .

  \ relative c '{\ key c \ major \ tempo 4 = 160 c4 ~ \ times 2/3 {r8 r8 g'8 ~} \ times 2/3 {g8 r8 fis8 ~} fis4 |  \ times 2/3 {r8 r8 (g8} \ times 2/3 {bes8 r8 g8} \ times 2/3 {c8 r8 bes8} g4) |  c, 4 ~ \ times 2/3 {r8 r8 g'8 ~} \ times 2/3 {g8 r8 fis8 ~} fis4 |  \ times 2/3 {r8 r8 (g8} \ times 2/3 {bes8 r8 g8} \ times 2/3 {c8 r8 bes8} g4) |  }

The actual song has the structure: verse- refrain vocal, verse-refrain instrumental and again verse-refrain vocal. The simple cadence of the verse: IVVI, the refrain: IV-I-IV-V. In the instrumental verse, the vocal melody is played in two parts by saxophone and guitar, in the refrain part the saxophone alone plays a sparing but concise improvisation of the melody. The riff of the intro is so distinctive that the song is clearly recognized after a few seconds.

publication

Boots Randolph hid under the pseudonym Randy Randolph on the single Percolator / Yakety Sax ( RCA Records 7395) released in October 1958 , which did not make it into the charts . It was the second single by the legendary saxophone player Randolph, who only later achieved great success as a session musician on the Nashville A-Team . With the B-side Yakety Sax , Randy Randolph was able to land a worldwide instrumental hit under his real name "Boots Randolph" in February 1963.

Cover versions

The song received no public attention in the USA and only became known in 1960 through two German-language versions. Trude Herr presented the song in a humorous way under the title I don't want any chocolate, I'd rather have a man (February 1960; Philips 876 938-7) and, with rank 18 in the German hit parade, was able to get the song the first chart note ever. The German text was written by Carl-Ulrich Blecher . However, he wrote three stanzas, so the instrumental part of the original could be omitted. The song was sung by Trude Herr (as Trude Pippes ) in the German hit film Marina , which premiered on August 19, 1960 with its 15 hits. This was followed by Die Travelers with the parody I don't want any pickled cucumbers (text: Fred Oldbod; recorded on May 19, 1960). With Non voglio cioccolata (September 1961), Mina brought an Italian version onto the market.

The instrumental hit of the same name by Billy Joe & the Checkmates from January 1962 with a rank 10 in the USA is not the same composition and was therefore subtitled "(Twist)" to avoid confusion. Dirk Bach relied on the physical parallels to Trude Herr and his homosexuality and brought out I don't want chocolate, I'd rather a man in September 1995.
