Perfluorononanoic acid is a chemical compound from the group of perfluorocarboxylic acids .

Extraction and presentation

Long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids such as perfluorononanoic acid can be prepared by the electrochemical fluorination of the corresponding acyl halide. They can also be obtained by fluorotelomerization or by hydrolysis of the perfluoroacyl fluoride and subsequent distillation .

properties

Perfluorononanoic acid is a flammable, difficult to ignite, crystalline, beige solid that is practically insoluble in water.

use

Long-chain perfluoroalkanecarboxylic acids (such as perfluorononanoic acid) and their salts are surface-active chemicals ( surfactants ) that greatly reduce the surface tension of water, aqueous solutions and organic liquids even in low concentrations. These acids (C 6 -C 12 ) and their derivatives are used as wetting, dispersing, emulsifying and foaming agents.
