Pericle Ducati (born July 11, 1880 in Bologna , † October 28, 1944 in Cortina d'Ampezzo ) was an Italian classical archaeologist and Etruscanologist . He taught as a professor of classical archeology at the University of Bologna .

Life

Pericle Ducati was born in Bologna to a family from Trentino . He studied Italian literature at the University of Bologna (where Giosuè Carducci gave lectures) and in Rome . After graduating, he also received a diploma in archeology .

Ducati soon became a professor of archeology and taught at the Universities of Catania (1912-1916), Turin (1916-1920) and Bologna (since 1920). From 1921 he was also director of the Museo Civico in Bologna and in 1923 he became dean of the faculty for literature and philosophy. He held this office until 1929 and again in the 1943/44 academic year.

Ducati was also a member of the Supreme Council for Antiques and Fine Arts ( Consiglio Superiore per le Antichità e le Belle Arti ), as well as a respected member of numerous domestic and foreign institutions ( Accademia dei Lincei , corresponding member since 1924, socio nazionale from 1936). As a learned scholar of Classical and Etruscan art, he left numerous articles and monographs (over 3,000 in total).

After the Italian armistice of 1943, Ducati remained loyal to fascism as a traditional nationalist and joined the Republic of Salò . This sympathy was his undoing. On February 24, 1944, he was attacked on the threshold of his house by unknown partisans who shot him in the back and seriously injured him. Ducati only survived the attack briefly, succumbing to his injuries on October 28 of the same year in a hospital in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
