Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics
The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) is based in Waterloo, Ontario , Canada . It is an independent research institute that deals with the fundamentals of theoretical physics . It also hosts a physics-focused summer camp for students every summer.
The PI was initiated in 1999 by Mike Lazaridis , co-founder and co-CEO of Research In Motion (manufacturer of the Blackberry ). In 2000, he made $ 100 million available in private funding for this purpose. The aim was to set up a research institute in Canada similar to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton or the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara , with a relatively small staff and many visiting scientists. The institute is funded by private foundations, companies, the Canadian government and the Ontario government. Research began in 2001 and in 2004 the company moved into its own building. In 2011 the Stephen Hawking Center was opened at the Perimeter Institute, which further expanded its capacities and can now accommodate around 250 scientists and young researchers. Stephen Hawking held a visiting professorship at the Perimeter Institute (Distinguished Visiting Research Chair) from 2009 to 2018.
The director of the institute has been Neil Turok since 2008 and Robert C. Myers since 2019 . The researchers working there include or were among others Lee Smolin , Freddy Cachazo , Davide Gaiotto , Natalia Toro , Jaume Gomis , Philip C. Schuster , Pedro G. Vieira , John Harnad , Simone Giombi , Asimina Arvanitaki , Matthew Choptuik , Kendrick Smith , Michele Mosca , Raymond Laflamme , Robert Brandenberger , Clifford Burgess , Savas Dimopoulos , Sabine Hossenfelder and Kevin Costello . The visiting scholars included a. Stephen Hawking , Nima Arkani-Hamed , Gerardus' t Hooft and Leonard Susskind .
