Perreo [ pe'reo ] is a fashion dance that is usually danced in pairs to the reggaeton music genre .

Perreo and reggaeton are so closely related that the terms are often used interchangeably. In the USA the dance form is also called grinding or booty dancing , synonymously also bumping , freak dancing or houseing ; as a rule, however , grinding can be danced to all kinds of music, while perreo is inextricably linked with reggaeton.

Sample images and videos of dance scenes can be found under some of the web links .

Word origin

The dance is called "Perreo" ( Puerto Rican slang for "dog", from Spanish perro ) because it is seen as an imitation of doggy- style intercourse . The name is said to have originated in 1995 , but different sources cite different origins and times.

The dance is so often characterized as "sex with clothes" that one can speak of a standing metaphor .

Related terms

In the Spanish-speaking environment, the associated verb perrear is also in use, a new word that can best be translated as “dancing perreo ”. A perreo dancer is called perro (“dog”), a perreo dancer is usually called gata (“cat”), more rarely also perra (“bitch”, vulgar but also “hooker”). The naming is the source of numerous puns, for example el perro entre las gatas (literally “the dog among cats”, meaning “the rooster in the basket”). In the red light district, Perreo strippers are called gata sandunguera ("graceful cat").

English-language names

The name of grinding ( English , therefore, "grind") is because the partner each other rubbing her lower body in a "milled" movement. Booty dancing goes back to the Afro-American slang expression booty (“butt”, “sex” and the like). Bumping ( "bumping"), freak dancing ( "freaky dancing") and houseing (by genre House ) are found less frequently.

History of origin

The Perreo probably originated in Puerto Rico in the late 1990s; Details of the genesis are not known. Puerto Rican youths probably adopted the sexually oriented grinding dance style of the US hip-hop movement and combined it with reggaeton.

From Puerto Rico, the perreo quickly spread to the Dominican Republic and via tourists to the United States. Dance and music achieved worldwide popularity around 2003.

The dance is currently mainly widespread in Latin America , especially in the holiday strongholds of Puerto Rico , Dominican Republic and Cuba , as well as in Spain and in the areas of the USA where hip hop and / or salsa are also common: Los Angeles , New York City and Miami .

technology

Perreo is a street dance and has no fixed technique or choreographed figures, although there have been some attempts at systematic order. However, there are unwritten guidelines on what Perreo should look like.

Technically, the Perreo corresponds to the dance style of the hip-hop music videos: Slightly bend the knees on accentuated beats, the dancers appear casual and make typical gestures, the dancers provoke with strong hip movements. In addition, there are techniques borrowed from Latin American dances such as merengue and salsa , such as hip movements and joint kneeling and standing up again.

In addition, the reenactment of different sex positions determines the image of the Perreo: The gentleman hugs the lady from behind, based on the spoon position , the lady stands bent over in front of the gentleman and lets him "mate" her like the doggy position, both of them stand opposite and clasping the partner's thigh with their own thighs, the gentleman is lying on the floor and the lady - sitting on his pelvis in the manner of the equestrian position - lets her hips circle; the perreo is only limited by the freedom of movement and flexibility of the dance partners.

At parties or in discos it sometimes happens that a group of several people forms in a row, the genders usually alternating (e.g. woman-man-woman). This is then called a sandwich (emparedado).

Protest and provocation

In contrast to other forms of ballroom dancing, in Perreo touching the genitals is not only allowed, but sometimes expressly desired. In doing so, the Perreo breaks a taboo that has so far not touched even the less prudish western world.

Puerto Rican society initially reacted indignantly to the Perreo, which resulted in temporary bans on the part of the government. In the meantime, however, the financial benefits that the island's music genre has brought to its global success seem to have appeased the mood.

It looks different in the USA. In 2000, a ruling by the superior court judge Paschal English caused a sensation in Atlanta ( Georgia , USA ): The youth club “Market” was permanently closed, and the operators Cliff Levingston and Taylor Williams were sentenced to imprisonment for committing a criminal offense and an offense . It was triggered by dance events at which minors - some children as young as 10 years old - practiced booty dancing . In various schools dance events were canceled or prohibited because young people danced grinding . And although sexually suggestive dance forms such as booty dancing are not to be regarded as an invitation or consent to intercourse according to US law, "they could, however, encourage prejudice, especially with regard to promiscuity," and thus undermine the credibility of witnesses before juries.

There have been no comparable reactions in Germany so far.
