List of domestic dogs

The Perro de Agua Español is an FCI recognized Spanish breed of dog ( FCI Group 8, Section 3, Standard No. 336 ).

Origin and history

The home of this dog is Spain , especially in southern Spain / Andalusia . It is divided into three different types, the Perro del Cantábrico type (in the north), the Marismeño type and the Sierra type , which is most common in Andalusia. There are two theories about its origin: according to one it should have been brought from North Africa by the Moors , according to the other the Turks should have brought this dog with them when exporting merino sheep .

description

The Perro de Agua Español is a medium-sized water dog and is up to 50 cm tall and 22 kg in weight, while being well-proportioned: the dog should be longer than it is tall. Its fur is always curly and woolly in texture, if it gets longer, villi can form like a Puli or Komondor . He is a "non-hairless" dog breed and, like all other curly dog breeds, needs grooming, such as combing or brushing.

Essence

Spanish Water Dogs are considered intelligent, eager to learn and work, they are very obedient and easy to train. The dogs attach themselves closely to their people, are friendly, happy, loyal and enterprising, they are tireless playmates for children. They are robust and adaptable dogs, sporty, fast, skillful and persistent. They are more cautious towards strangers; if they have gained confidence, they are uncomplicated dogs.

Breed specific diseases

In the Perro de Agua Español, as with many medium-sized and large dog breeds, hereditary hip dysplasia (HD) can occur. Therefore, only X-rayed parent animals are allowed to be used for breeding in Germany. According to the VDH regulations, breeding is allowed up to a degree of HD-C, the partner must then be HD-free. The breed has also been shown to have prcd-PRA , a hereditary eye disease that leads to blindness. The carriers can be identified by genetic testing and consequences for breeding can be drawn. Other problems are ear infections, which are promoted by the very hairy floppy ears.

use

In Spain, they are still used as herding dogs , as punting dogs and retrieving dogs for hunting and as helpers for fishermen. Today it is used in almost all areas, as a rescue dog , sniffer dog for drugs, explosives or fire accelerators, and even as a protection dog .

Ultimately, he is a very good family dog , but like all working dogs, he needs sufficient exercise and activity. Dog sports and water work demand him according to his nature.
