Perry Schmidt-Leukel (born September 21, 1954 in Bonn ) is a German theologian and religious scholar. Since 2009 he has been a professor for religious studies and intercultural theology at the University of Münster . There he also heads the seminar for religious studies and intercultural theology ( Center for Religious Studies and Inter-faith Theology ).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1973, Schmidt-Leukel completed his studies in 1982 with a diploma in Catholic theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich. Then, in February 1984, he obtained his Magister Artium in Philosophy there, and in February 1990 he also received his doctorate theologiae . In May 1996 he was able to qualify for his habilitation in the fields of fundamental theology , ecumenical theology and religious studies . Before his call to Münster, Schmidt-Leukel taught at the universities of Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Glasgow. The focus of his work lies in the area of fundamental theology , the theology of religions, pluralistic approaches in religions, interreligious relations in general and the Christian-Buddhist dialogue in particular. Schmidt-Leukel has been a member of the Anglican Church ( Scottish Episcopal Church ) since 2001 .

Perry Schmidt-Leukel is a representative of the pluralistic theology of religion . This denies that Christianity is the religion that is superior to all others and assumes that at least some religions are equal to each other with regard to their knowledge of divine reality and their power to mediate salvation. Because of this view, which relativized the Christian claim to superiority, the Archbishop of Munich, Friedrich Cardinal Wetter, withdrew his church teaching license ( Nihil obstat ) after completing his habilitation . Thus Schmidt-Leukel could not become a private lecturer .

In October 2015 Schmidt-Leukel was the first German to hold the renowned Gifford Lectures at the University of Glasgow in 25 years . In these lectures on “Interreligious Theology: The Future Shape of Theology”, he presented his thoughts on a fractal interpretation of religious diversity for the first time. With this interpretation he was "far ahead of the university and church theology of the Christian denominations [...]", judged Norbert Copray . In 2019, a volume edited by Alan Race and Paul Knitter (“New Paths for Interreligious Theology: Perry Schmidt-Leukel's Fractal Interpretation of Religious Diversity”) appeared in which internationally renowned scholars from the perspective of different religions and disciplines Schmidt-Leukel's thesis that show and discuss fractal patterns in religious diversity. In July 2020, the Catholic Press Association (CPA) awarded the work with the "Book Award. 3rd Place" in the category Ecumenism / Interreligious Relations. On February 5, 2020, the University of Vechta Schmidt-Leukel awarded the Höffmann Science Prize for Intercultural Competence.
