Pete Souza (born December 31, 1954 in New Bedford , Massachusetts ) is an American photojournalist of Portuguese descent and former chief photographer of the White House . He began as a photographer for the US President Ronald Reagan and then worked for Barack Obama .

Life

Souza's four grandparents emigrated from the Azores to the USA at the beginning of the 20th century . Souza grew up in Dartmouth ( Bristol County, Massachusetts ). He studied communications at Boston University and earned a Masters in Journalism and Mass Media from Kansas State University . During the presidency of Ronald Reagan he accompanied him from June 1983 to 1989 as chief photographer.

He worked for the Chicago Tribune and as a freelance photojournalist for National Geographic and Life Magazine . At the beginning of the Afghan war he was one of the first journalists to report on the fall of Kabul from there. He was the official photographer during Ronald Reagan's funeral in June 2004.

Pete Souza has accompanied Barack Obama in a photo documentary since 2005, when he became US Senator for the state of Illinois in January . Among other things, he followed him on his travels through several countries and sketched him in his political ascent. With Obama's election as president, he was named chief photographer of the White House. As such, on January 13, 2009, he shot the first official presidential portrait created with a digital camera. One of the most famous of Souza's photos of Obama's presidency is Situation Room , which shows the president along with members of his security team during the Neptune's Spear military operation in which Osama bin Laden was killed. Souza's term ended with the inauguration of Donald Trump . His successor under Trump is Shealah Craighead .
