history

Peter and Paul Church before the renovation work in the 20th century

The previous building was first mentioned in a document in 1059 and burned down completely in 1621. It is unclear whether the round tower of the previous building used to be part of a fortified tower or a fortified church. The patronage of the Peter and Paul Church initially belonged to the Lüne Monastery .

In 1644 a simple stone church was built. The field stone church had a rectangular tower and a right-angled choir attached to the nave . In addition to field stones , the masonry also contained granite .

Between 1907 and 1909, the church was given its present-day appearance through renovations by the architect Wilhelm Matthies from Bardowick . The church tower was also added to the west. At the time of the renovation, the altar, the pulpit and other pieces of equipment were purchased through donations.

Between 1990 and 1993 the church was renovated. Old paintings in the church from the renovation work from the beginning of the 20th century were restored.

architecture

The church has a massive church tower with a clock tower in the west . A recessed polygonal choir adjoins the rectangular nave in the east. The sacristy borders the choir to the north . To the northeast, the church has an entrance porch that was only added during the renovation work at the beginning of the 20th century. The facade of the building consists of field and bricks. The roofs of the church are covered with red tiles.

The choir contains four windows with stained glass from 1908. Directly behind the altar, a window shows Jesus Christ . On the altar in the choir is a small wooden altarpiece , which shows the cross of Jesus in the middle and two biblical scenes to the side. The choir opens to the nave with a round arch . The nave of the hall church contains a gallery in the west and in the northern entrance porch . The church organ is located on the western gallery . The blue wooden ceiling is supported by crossbeams painted in brown.

The church is decorated with various recurring paintings. Large white crosses, anchors and hearts are depicted on a dark blue background in the galleries. Ribbons of red roses with green leaves can be seen on the white walls.
