Peter Arens (historian)

Peter Arens (born June 12, 1961 in Gerolstein ) is a German historian , author and television producer. He worked on the documentary series The Germans and wrote books on topics such as the migration of peoples and German history.

Life

Peter Arens studied German , Romance studies , political science and French at the universities in Mainz and Toulouse . In addition to his studies, he worked as a freelancer for various daily newspapers in Germany and France.

In 1988 he began his career as a volunteer at ZDF . From 1997 to 2005 he was head of the history and society editorial team at ZDF. From 2001 to 2003 he was also managing director at doc.station, a subsidiary of ZDF. In 2003 he also took over the project management of the ZDF cultural show Our Best . From January 2006 to March 2017 he then headed the main editorial department for culture and science. Since 2007 Peter Arens has also been a lecturer in the "Educational and Scientific Film " course at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy in Ludwigsburg . Since April 2017 he has been head of the main history and science editorial team.

Peter Arens is married to the journalist Barbara Hahlweg and has 3 daughters with her.

Work at ZDF

Peter Arens has contributed to many ZDF television productions on the subject of culture and history. His best-known work is the documentary series Die Deutschen , which he developed with Guido Knopp and Stefan Brauburger and which he also published in a book. He also worked on the documentaries Die Deutschland-Saga , Women Who Made History and Our Best With, for each of which he published a book.

Awards

Peter Arens received the German Camera Award and the German Business Film Award for the documentary Von Geishas and Gameboys - Japan in Transition . He was also nominated for the German Infotainment Film Prize.
