Peter August Becker (* before 1772, † after 1801) was a bell and piece caster in Hanover at the time of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Life

Peter August Becker lived and worked in the Aegidienneustadt of Hanover, there “ on the Walle .” In 1778 he advertised in the magazine Hanoverian advertisements of all kinds of things, which were necessary and useful to publicize the common being under the rubric mixed messages “melodious permanent bells, which he can certify with certificates on request ; also fire sprinklers of various kinds, with double and simple works; of the latter kind another finished, and otherwise all kinds of metalwork. Famous works

  • 1772: the largest of three bells for the church in Nordstemmen
  • 1777: Casting of a small, broken bell, which was cast again by the bell founder Dreyer in Linden between 1861 and 1862 .
  • 1785: Casting of the big bell for the church in Liebenau ; shortly afterwards, however, the bell got a crack when the mayor Leiding's death knell, so that the bell's previously beautiful sound was lost. As a result, a lawsuit was brought against Becker. However, in order to save the costs of re-casting, the master blacksmith Hockemeyer tried to knock out the cracked part of the bell with a large forging hammer - with success: The then somewhat usable bell was used until 1833, before it was then used by the bell founder Bock was poured again in Linden. After this procedure the weight of the big bell in Liebenau was 19 3/4 quintals .
  • On March 20, 1801, Becker, who was still active in Hanover, was commissioned to cast a new bell to replace the broken one of the two bells in the Elisabeth Church in Langenhagen , but the weight was not allowed to exceed 13 quintals. For the new cast he was allowed to use the material of the old bell from the Hanoverian bell foundry Weidemann.
