Peter August Ludwig Maria Michael Gabriel Raphael Gonzaga of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Bragança (born March  19, 1866 in Rio de Janeiro , † July 6, 1934 in Tulln on the Danube ) was a prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha from the Catholic Sideline Koháry as well as imperial Brazilian heir to the throne.

Life

Prince Peter August, Emperor Peter II of Brazil and Empress Teresa Cristina of Brasil ( 1887 )

Peter was the eldest son of Prince August (1845-1907) from his marriage to the Brazilian Infanta Leopoldina , second daughter of Emperor Peter II. The prince was considered the favorite grandson of Emperor Peter and was raised in Brazil together with his younger brother August Leopold .

Peter was heir to the throne in the Brazilian Empire until 1876, the year the eldest son of Crown Princess Isabella was born. During the military coup in 1889 and the fall of the monarchy, the reign of Prince Peters was briefly discussed.

During the flight of the imperial family from Brazil on board the cruiser Paranahyba, Peter showed symptoms of a psychiatric illness . He had to be isolated in his cabin because he was paranoid and tried to murder the captain of the ship. In Europe, the disease broke out completely. After attempting suicide, he lived mainly in Tulln until his death . One of his practitioners was Sigmund Freud . Peter died in a Viennese sanatorium and was buried in the so-called Koháry crypt of the St. Augustin church in Coburg .
