Prince August Leopold of Saxe-Coburg

August Leopold Philipp Maria Michael Gabriel Raphael Gonzaga of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Bragança (born  December 6, 1867 in Rio de Janeiro , † October 11, 1922 in Schladming ) was a prince from the Catholic line of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry as well as an imperial Brazilian Pretender to the throne.

Life

August Leopold was the second son of Prince August (1845–1907) from his marriage to the Brazilian Infanta Leopoldina , the second daughter of Emperor Peter II. The prince was brought up with his older brother Peter in Brazil and fled with the imperial family in 1889 France. He later served in the Austrian Navy.

After the fall of the Brazilian monarchy and the death of his grandfather Peter II, August Leopold became a central figure of the monarchists during the restoration efforts in Brazil in 1895 , since the actual heir to the throne, Peter's eldest daughter Isabella , has no support from the population due to her personality decreed. Austrian diplomacy and especially the German Kaiser Wilhelm II supported the prince's candidacy; the latter with the words: “ I would be very happy. He's a very energetic - somewhat libertine - character and will likely do a thorough job of cleaning up the Republican Hallunken. "

August Leopold was awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Portuguese Order of Tower and Sword in 1903 . In the previous year he had acquired the castle and estate Gerasdorf am Steinfeld , which he sold again in 1918. After the death of his cousin Leopold in 1916, August Leopold inherited the Koháry estate, which made him one of the most important Hungarian magnates.

August Leopold was buried in the so-called Koháry crypt of the St. Augustin church in Coburg .
