Political career

Peter Bürgel was parliamentary group leader of the CSU in the Dachau city council from 1996 to 2002. In 2002 he ran for the office of Lord Mayor of Dachau against the incumbent Kurt Piller (ÜB). Since the first ballot, March 3, 2002, did not lead to an absolute majority from one of the two opponents, they had to go into the runoff election. In this election, a nationally sensational election fraud scandal took place. The runoff election of March 17, 2002, which Bürgel won with a 73 majority against Piller, had to be repeated.

Bürgel won this with a majority of 1221 votes.

The focus of his first term of office was a. the responsible handling of the city's history and the promotion of the former artists' colony of Dachau as a city with art and culture. This engagement resulted in the election of Bürgel as president of EuroArt in 2007 , an association of 80 artist venues from 21 European countries.

Peter Bürgel was confirmed in office in the local elections in 2008, although he again had to go to the runoff election against the challenger Volker Koch from the SPD. In 2014 he was defeated by his challenger Florian Hartmann ( SPD ) in the runoff election.

In 2015 Bürgel was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
