biography

Zauner learned his father's profession of bookbinder . After years of apprenticeship and traveling, he took over a bookbindery in Dachau in 1909 . He was elected district master craftsman in 1927. In 1927 he founded the first vocational school in Bavaria . In 1928 he was elected as a non-party member of the district assembly and in 1929 in the Dachau municipal council. On his initiative, the market town was elevated to a town in 1933 .

In 1933, Zauner became the only member of the city council to join the NSDAP. From 1935 he was the mayor's second and from 1940 first deputy. After Dachau was occupied by the US Army at the end of April 1945, he was appointed acting mayor when the Americans learned of his Nazi party membership after 14 days, but he was released again. In 1947 he was classified as a follower by the Spruchkammer (group IV).

In 1952, Zauner was elected mayor of Dachau. In an interview with the English newspaper Sunday Express in January 1960, Zauner took the view that not only heroes had died in the Dachau concentration camp , but also many political prisoners because they had illegally opposed the government of the time. This statement caused a sensation, but was denied by Zauner. He resigned from office in the same year. During his tenure, several new schools, the sewage treatment plant and the development plan for the Dachau-Ost district were built in the city. His grave is in the Dachau forest cemetery. The Zauner print shop was closed in 2012 for economic reasons.

Honors

In 1955, Zauner received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Golden Ring of Honor from the city of Dachau. The Bürgermeister-Zauner-Strasse in Dachau is named after him.
