Peter Ballantine

Peter Ballantine (born November 16, 1791 in Dundee ; † January 23, 1883 in Newark ) was a Scottish brewer and one of the founders of the Patterson & Ballantine Brewery, which later became known under his leadership as P. Ballantine & Sons . At the height of its success, P. Ballantine & Sons was the third largest brewery in the United States .

biography

Ballantine was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1791. At the age of 29 he emigrated to the USA and found a job as a master brewer at the Market Street Brewery Robert Dunlops in Albany . In 1834 he bought the brewery and renamed it Peter Ballantine & Co to. He ran it successfully until 1840 when he moved to Newark to start a new brewery.

Together with Erastus Patterson he founded the Patterson & Ballantine Brewery. In 1846 he bought his shares and became the sole owner. Under Ballantine's direction, the production volume grew steadily, in 1870 around 60,000 barrels of ale and 30,000 bushels of malt were produced. In 1856 Ballantine took his sons Peter Jr., John and Robert into the management of the brewery, which was renamed P. Ballantine & Sons . The brewery operated under this name until its closure in 1972.

Peter Ballantine introduced Borromean rings as the logo of the brewery , which should stand for “ Purity, Body, Flavor ” (Eng. “Purity, Body, Taste”). According to the company legend, Ballantine is said to have used the wet rings that beer glasses left on tables as inspiration.

Ballantine died in 1884 at the age of 91. His son Peter Jr. had died a year before him. His sons John and Robert took over the management of the brewery. Ballantine is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery , Newark. Under his leadership, the brewery had grown to become the sixth largest brewery in the United States.

Peter Ballantine married Julia Wilson (April 9, 1796 - June 7, 1868) from Troy in 1830. They had three children together:

Ballantine is the great grandfather of the American politician Peter Hood Ballantine Frelinghuysen and the entrepreneur Peter Hood Ballantine Cumming .
