Peter Cornelis Bol

Peter Cornelis Bol (born November 18, 1941 in Freiburg ; † July 19, 2012 ) was a German-Dutch classical archaeologist .

Peter Cornelis Bol, son of mathematician Gerrit Bol was at the 1967 University of Freiburg in Felix Eckstein with the work The sculptures of the ship's discovery of Antikythera doctorate . For his dissertation he was awarded a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , with the help of which he was able to travel to the Mediterranean in 1969/70 . This was followed by a long-term collaboration on the German excavation in Olympia . In 1974 he became curator of the collection of antiques at the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt am Main . In 1978 , Bol completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt with the work Large bronze sculpture in Olympia . There he also taught classical archeology as an honorary professor . In 2006 he retired.

Bol was an internationally recognized expert in the field of ancient sculpture and bronze sculpture. The fruit of this inclination was the reconstruction of the Myronic Athena-Marsyas group in bronze, which was installed in 1983 in the park of the Liebieghaus. He initiated the publication of the antiquities of the Villa Albani in Rome and the publication project The History of Ancient Sculpture . In addition, he wrote three scientific catalogs on the antique sculptures in the Liebieghaus. The acquisition of the best-preserved Roman copy of Naukydes' "competing discobol" and the sensational exhibition Polyklet . The sculptor of the Greek classical period in 1990 was one of the most popular results of his scientific work, which made ancient art accessible to a wide audience. He was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

Peter Cornelis was married to the classical archaeologist Renate Bol .
