Peter Cabus

Peter Cabus (born July 27, 1923 in Mechelen ; † November 11, 2000 there ) was a Belgian ( Flemish ) composer .

Life

Peter Cabus began his studies at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven with Flor Peeters ( organ ) and Marinus De Jong ( counterpoint ). Then he graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels . There he studied piano with Charles Scharrès , chamber music with André Gertler , composition and fugue with Jean Absil and Léon Jongen . His diplomas pointed the way to becoming a composer and music teacher rather than a pianist . After completing his studies he was organist at Sint Katelijnekerk in Mechelen and worked as a pianist in various chamber music ensembles.

From 1947 to 1959 he was a music teacher at the Music Academy in Mortsel , Belgium and at the Conservatory in Mechelen. He also gave music lessons at the classical grammar school in Keerbergen (1950-1954) and at a middle school in Antwerp (1954-1959). In 1959 he succeeded his sponsor Godfried Devreese as director of the Mechlin Conservatory and worked in this office until 1988.

From 1968 to 1988 he was also a professor of composition , harmony and counterpoint at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Cabus' most famous pupil was Johan Duijck , later director of the Flemish Radio Choir , the Choir of the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields and the Madrigal Choir Gent . Even Jan van Landeghem , now director of the Music Academy Bornem (Belgium), and Carl Verbraeken , now director of the Music Academy Sint-Pieters-Woluwe (Belgium) and chairman of the Union of Belgian composer , studied composition with him.

In 1980 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Science, Poetry and Fine Arts of Belgium .

His complete oeuvre comprises more than 300 works from all genres. Stylistically, it can be assigned to neoclassicism .
