Jean Absil's father, François Absil, was a sexton at the Basilica of Bon-Secours . Jean was an early music student of Alphonse Oeyen , the organist at the basilica. Soon afterwards he was appointed organist at the pilgrimage basilica of Saint-Quentin in Bon-Secours. He attended courses at the Ecole Saint-Gregoire in Tournai to prepare for the study of sacred music. From 1913 he studied at the Brussels Conservatory , first in the organ class of Alfons Desmet (1864–1944) as well as piano and counterpoint with Léon Du Bois (1859–1935). He then concentrated on composition and instrumentation and studied with Paul Gilson in Brussels from 1920 to 1922 . In 1921 he won the Prix Agniez with his first opus, the first symphony from 1920. In 1922 he was awarded a second prize at the Belgian Prix de Rome for his cantata La Guerre op. 2. In 1922 he received the Prix Rubens and was awarded the title Appointed director of the Music Academy in Etterbeek , which he directed until 1958 and which has been named after him since 1963. From 1930 he taught harmony at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and from 1939 counterpoint and fugue. In the same year, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium appointed him to teach counterpoint and fugue at the newly founded Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth. In 1934 he was a co-founder of La Siréne, a society for the promotion of contemporary music , which organized concerts at home and abroad and functioned as a counterpart to the Le Triton society founded in Paris in 1932 . In 1938 he helped found the music newspaper Revue internationale de Musique . After World War II he became President of SABAM . Absil was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium . He was friends with Florent Schmitt . The Belgian composers Jacques Leduc (1932–2016) and Victor Legley (1915–1994) were among his students. Even Emma Lou Diemer was a composition student Absils.

style

In terms of composition, Absil formed a synthesis of the French School, the style of Stravinsky and Bartók , of polytonal, atonal and serial music . His extensive oeuvre encompasses almost all genres .
