Peter Frederick Carnley (born October 17, 1937 in New Lambton , New South Wales ) is an Anglican , Australian clergyman and a former Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Australia .

Life

Carnley studied Anglican theology at Trinity College, University of Melbourne , and in England at Emmanuel College and St John's College of Cambridge University . In 1970 he received his PhD there based on a dissertation on John Knox . From 1973 he worked as head ( warden ) of St John's College at the University of Queensland , where he also taught systematic theology . At the same time he was canon at St. John's Cathedral in Brisbane. From 1981 to 2004 he was the successor of Geoffrey Sambell Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Perth. He was succeeded in office as archbishop in Perth Roger Herft . From 1999 to 2004 Carnley was the successor to Keith Rayner Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia. He was followed in office as Primate Phillip Aspinall .

Carnley was from 2004 co-chair of the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC).

Honors

Carnley was named Companion of the Order of Australia in 2007. Various universities honored him with honorary doctorates . The Peter Carnley Anglican Community School , a church comprehensive school in Kwinana , was named after him.
