Peter Cunningham (naturalist)
Peter Cunningham (born July 1, 1918 in Glasgow , † July 8, 2014 in Stornoway ) was a Scottish amateur naturalist and author.
Life
Born as William Alfred John Cunningham , he soon took the first name Peter , which his grandfather had always used to address him because he did not like Cunningham's baptismal name. After visiting the Jordan Hill College School in Glasgow Cunningham was with the then British Ministry of Customs and Excise ( HM Customs and Excise in operation), interrupted by his military service in the Royal Navy , in which he at the end of World War II the rank of lieutenant commander had achieved. In 1949 he took a job with the Customs Service in Stornoway on Lewis , where he would spend the rest of his life. In 1954 he married in Stornoway.
After his retirement in 1978, Cunningham wrote works on the flora and fauna of the Hebrides , of which The Birds of the Outer Hebrides from 1983 is considered the standard work . Cunningham had previously appeared in a regular Nature Notes column in the Stornoway Gazette .
