Peter E. Costello

Peter Edward Costello (born June 27, 1853 in Boston , Massachusetts , †  October 23, 1935 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1921 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Costello attended public schools in his homeland. In 1877 he moved to Philadelphia, where he worked in various craft industries. He also worked in the construction and real estate industries. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1895 and 1903 and again from 1908 to 1915 he was a member of the Philadelphia City Council. From 1903 to 1905 he was director of the city authority for public works.

In the 1914 congressional election , Costello was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Michael Donohoe on March 4, 1915 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1921 . The First World War fell during this time . In addition, the 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified in 1919 and 1920 .

In 1920 Costello renounced another candidacy. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, he worked in the investment and investment business in Philadelphia. He died on October 23, 1935.

  1. Costello's year of birth is given in his congress biography as 1854. His tombstone, however, shows the year 1853.
