Peter Andrew Eagles, QHC (born July 6, 1959 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England since 2017 .

Life

education

Eagles, born to Peter Frank Eagles and Elizabeth Howie Eagles, attended the Royal Grammar School, a private boys' school ( Independent school ) in Guildford in the English county of Surrey . He majored in combination "Eastern European Studies" ( East European Studies ) at the School of Slavonic ; He also studied German and Russian at King's College, London , where he graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Associateship of King's College (AKC).

From 1982 to 1986 Eagles was initially a teacher ( Assistant Master ) at the Tonbridge School, an independent school, in Tonbridge , Kent , and worked as a freelance translator on the side . Career

In 1989 he was in the St Paul's Cathedral by Bishop Graham Leonard for deacon ordained; In 1990 he was ordained a priest by Bishop Tom Butler . He began his priestly career from 1989 to 1992 as vicar ( curate ) at St Martin's Church, an Anglo-Catholic parish, in Ruislip in the Diocese of London .

Since 1992 he also worked as a military chaplain . In January 1992 Eagles joined the Royal Army Chaplains Department of the British Army as a chaplain ( Chaplain ) , where he was promoted several times in the following years. From 2007 to 2008 he was chaplain of the Royal Military Chapel ( Guards Chapel ), St. James Park, in the Wellington Barracks in London.

In May 2017, Eagles' appointment as Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England was announced. He succeeded Robert Paterson , who retired in November 2016.

He was ordained bishop by Archbishop of York , John Sentamu , during a service in York Minster on June 22, 2017 . His enthronement took place on September 30, 2017 at Peel Cathedral in Peel, Isle of Man . As Bishop of Sodor and Man, he is also an ex officio member of the Legislative Council of Tynwald , the Manx Parliament. He took his seat at the same time as his inauguration.

Eagles, despite his Anglo-Catholic background, is a proponent of women's ordination ; he announced that he would also consecrate women to deaconess and priestess.

Honors and private matters

In 2013 he was made an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen (QHC) of Queen Elizabeth II . From 2015 he was Ehrenkanoniker ( Honorary Canon ) of Salisbury Cathedral .

In 1992 he married Gail Seager, whom he had met during his time as a parish vicar in Ruislip. The couple lived in a total of 14 different places over the next 25 years. The marriage resulted in a son who graduated from Balliol College in 2016 and was working for an advertising agency in Oxford at the time of Eagles' appointment as bishop.

Eagles' interests include European languages ​​and literature, intercultural learning , restoring an old, small house, hiking in the mountains and making music, especially baroque music ; Eagles himself plays the oboe .
