Peter Ehlers

Peter Ehlers (born August 30, 1943 in Flensburg , Schleswig-Holstein province ) is a former German administrative lawyer and was President of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) from 1989 to 2008 . During his tenure, he was particularly committed to protecting the seas.

Life and work

Ehlers studied law in Marburg and Kiel from 1967 to 1970 . He received his doctorate in 1969 on the subject of "Intergovernmental Advisory Maritime Organization (IMCO) and its significance for international maritime shipping".

From 1970 he was the department head for maritime transport in the waterways and shipping directorate north. In this role he was in charge of the sailing competitions at the 1972 Olympic Games in the Kiel Fjord.

After moving to the Federal Ministry of Transport in 1973, he was responsible for maritime pilots and ship safety in the maritime transport department. Among other things, his area of ​​responsibility included the introduction of the transfer of sea pilots by helicopter. From 1976 to 1981 he was managing director of the commission of the pilot administrations of the Baltic Sea states and German representative in the commission of the pilot administrations of the North Sea states.

In 1981 he moved to the German Hydrographic Institute (DHI) as head of the central department, before returning to the Federal Ministry of Transport in 1983 as head of the "Marine Environment Protection, Hydrography, Maritime Radio" department. During this time he helped, among other things, to prepare the first North Sea Protection Conference. In 1989 he was called back to the DHI, which had meanwhile been renamed the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, as President and Professor. He retired on August 29, 2008.

After the death of his first wife, Ehlers is married for a second time and has a daughter and a son.
