Peter Fry

Peter Derek Fry Kt (born May 26, 1931 in High Wycombe , Buckinghamshire , † May 12, 2015 ) was a British Conservative Party politician who represented the Wellingborough constituency as a member of the House of Commons for 28 years .

Life

University studies, local politicians and unsuccessful lower house candidates

Fry, whose father was a member of the City Council of High Wycombe and 1945-1950 chairman of that committee for housing, graduated after attending the Royal Grammar School , and two years of service in the National Service to study at Worcester College of the University of Oxford and entered during his studies in 1949 the youth association of the Conservative Party (Young Conservatives) in his birthplace High Wycombe and in 1951 the Conservative Association of the University of Oxford as a member. There he met Michael Heseltine . After completing his studies, he worked as an insurance broker and in his family's retail business.

His political career began in local politics when he in 1961 as member of the Council of the County of Buckinghamshire (Buckinghamshire County Council) has been selected and this belonged to the 1967th During this time he served as Parliamentary Secretary ( Whip ) the fraction of the Conservative Party and was a member of the Education Committee.

In the general election of October 15, 1964 , Fry ran for the Conservative Party in the constituency of Nottingham North , but was defeated by the constituency holder of the Labor Party , William Charles Whitlock, with a difference of 8957 votes. While Whitlock got 29,535 votes (57.14 percent), he received only 20,578 votes (39.81 percent). In the subsequent general election of March 31, 1966 , he ran for the Conservative Tories again for a mandate , this time in the constituency of Willesden East , where he was subject to the opponent of the Labor Party, Reg Freeson .

After a by -election in the Wellingborough constituency was necessary due to the death of Labor MP Harry Howarth on December 5, 1969 , Fry ran there and was able to defeat the opposing candidate with 22,548 votes (54.4 percent) Labor Party, JH Mann, which received only 16,499 votes (39.8 percent). He was re-elected in the subsequent elections before losing to his opponent from the Labor Party, Paul Stinchcombe , in the general election on May 1, 1997 with just 187 votes . At the beginning of his membership in the House of Commons, he was a member of the Transport Committee and Secretary of the Anglo-Yugoslav Society.

For his many years of service Fry was beaten to a Knight Bachelor in 1994 and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". After leaving the House of Commons, he took on the role of Chairman of the Bingo Association and was also Chairman of the Federation of European Bingo Associations (EUBINGO) founded in 2006 .
