Peter Gidal

Peter Gidal (* 1946 ) is a British film theorist and director of avant-garde films .

life and work

Peter Gidal was born in 1946 and grew up in Switzerland and Mount Vernon , New York . From 1964 to 1968 he studied theater studies , psychology and German literature at Brandeis University in Massachusetts before he was enrolled at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1966 to 1967 . He continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London until 1971, where he then worked as a university lecturer in film studies until 1984 .

Gidal has been making films since 1966. He has published articles in the magazines "Studio International", "Screen", "October" and "Undercut" and is the author of several books. Peter Gidal is one of the filmmakers of "Structural / Materialist Film".

Gidal's best-known film is Room Film 1973 , which was shown in 1974 at the 5th Experimental Film Festival in Knokke, Belgium and in 1977 at documenta 6 in Kassel.

Memberships

Peter Gidal has been an active member of the London Film-Makers 'Co-op since 1969 , which was founded on the model of the Film-makers' Cooperative in New York City . Other members include Malcolm Le Grice , Michael "Atters" Attree, Annabel Nicolson, Lis Rhodes, Gill Eatherley, Roger Hammond, Sandra Lahire, David Crosswaite and William Raban . In 1975 Gidal co-founded the "Film-makers' Association" and from 1978 to 1981 a member of the "British Film Institute Production Board".

Exhibitions

Gidal's films have been shown at the Tate Gallery of Modern Art , the Hayward Gallery and the Edinburgh International Film Festival . Retrospectives took place at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1983 and at the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1996 . Gidal participated in group exhibitions in 1975 at the Museum of Modern Art , New York, the Royal Belgium Film Archive and Cinematheque and in 1976 Arte Inglese Oggi: 1960-76 Palazzo Reale , Milan.
