Peter Henry Goldsmith, Baron Goldsmith , PC , QC (born January 5, 1950 in Liverpool ) is a British attorney and former Attorney General of England and Wales and Northern Ireland.

Family, education and title

Goldsmith was born to Sydney Elland Goldsmith and his wife Myra Nurick. In 1974 he married his wife Joy with whom he has three daughters and a son. He received his education at the Calderstones School in Liverpool . After studying law at Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University , he completed a postgraduate course at the University College London , which he in 1972 with a Master of Law graduated. He was promoted to the status of Life Peer on July 29, 1999 and has since held the title of Baron Goldsmith , of Allerton in the County of Merseyside .

Professional background

After completing his studies, he received his barrister-at-law license from the Gray's Inn Bar Association in 1972 . He is also a member of the Paris Bar Association and has been authorized to practice law in New South Wales since 2010 . Until 2001 he practiced for Fountain Court Chambers . There he mainly dealt with questions from commercial law and with appeal cases . In 1987 he was awarded the title of Queen's Counsel and in 1995 he was appointed Deputy High Court Judge . He was appointed Attorney General in 2001 and became a Privy Counselor the following year .

In connection with the Iraq war, Goldsmith came under criticism after letters became public alleging that he initially questioned the legality of an invasion, but later took it for granted.

He resigned from the office of Attorney General on June 27, 2007, the same day that Tony Blair resigned from his post as Prime Minister . Of all the Labor Attorney Generals, he is the one with the longest tenure. In September 2007 he joined the US law firm Debevoise & Plimpton . In their London office he deals with disputes in the European and Asian sectors.

Memberships

Goldsmith has been a member of the American Law Institute since 1997 . He is also a member of both the Union Internationale des Avocats and the International Bar Association .
