Vigilante justice

In the early 1980s, Hartmann became known to a wide public because of several cases of vigilante justice. Hartmann, for example, stopped a bus from Stadtwerke Lübeck that he believed was using the wrong lane in a way that forced the driver to apply the emergency brake, which injured two passengers. In addition, Hartmann repeatedly slapped young people who, in his opinion, had behaved incorrectly - for example rode a bicycle on the sidewalk on a busy street - and cursed a police officer as a "stupid sergeant". The fact that criminal proceedings against Hartmann were discontinued, although a comparable case had been convicted, caused public discussion. In another trial, Hartmann was convicted of assault .

Because of these incidents, Gerhard Mauz described Hartmann in the news magazine Der Spiegel as a standing court on two legs.
