Peter Houseman (born December 24, 1945 in Battersea , † March 20, 1977 near Oxford ) was an English football player .

life and career

The Englishman started his career in the youth of Chelsea . In 1963 he signed a professional contract with the "Blues". In the same year he made his debut against Sheffield United . After initial problems with the coach and fans, the midfielder prevailed at Chelsea. He was referred to as the "water carrier" of the stars. In 1970 he was the English Cup winner and scored the equalizer against Leeds United in the final . A year later he was the winner of the European Cup Winners' Competition. After the crisis years in London, Houseman moved to Oxford United . Until his death in 1977 he was under contract with the O's. Houseman died of a car accident on a motorway near Oxford after attending a fundraiser. His wife and two friends were also killed in the car accident. Chelsea FC hosted a farewell game for Peter Houseman due to the events in 1977. The memorial game was attended by over 17,000 spectators. In Oakley and the surrounding area a youth championship was named after the midfielder.
