Peter Leibing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Leibing (* 1941 in Hamburg , † 2. November 2008 in Oerel ) was a German photographer . His picture of the border guard Conrad Schumann jumping over the barbed wire is one of the best-known images of the Cold War as a media icon .

Life

In August 1961, the then 19-year-old Peter Leibing was sent to the sector border in Berlin by the Contipress picture agency to take pictures of the zone border. On August 15, he observed the GDR border guard Conrad Schumann when he decided to jump over the barbed wire barn into the French sector . Leibing pressed the shutter release of his Exakta camera (with a 200 mm telephoto lens) exactly in a tenth of a second when it was exactly above the barbed wire: no longer in the east, but not yet in the west. Accurately estimate the perfect moment had Leibing when jumping in Klein Flottbek learned that he had often photographed before.

As a police photographer and press photographer , he worked for the Hamburger Echo , the Hamburger Morgenpost and the Hamburger Abendblatt until his retirement.
