Peter Lutz (* 1799 in Munich ; † 1867 there ) was a German engraver , draftsman, painter and lithographer .

Life

Peter Lutz received his training in drawing from Peter von Langer or Robert von Langer and learned the technique of engraving from Christoph Heß . Two of his drawings ended up in the Maillinger Collection in Munich. His copperplate engraving of the Dresden Maria on the Clouds by Bagnacavallo , on which he had worked for several years, and his reproduction of the Madonna di San Francesco by Correggio were highly praised . He was honored by the King of Prussia for the engraving after Bagnacavallo , which was commented in the Bavarian People's Friend as follows: “The friend of the people must be pleased if such news comes from a Bavarian, and from a Munich resident, whose artistic appreciation is also abroad is highly respected. ”Lutz had created the engraving on behalf of Rittner's art dealer Ernst Arnold in Dresden. The drawn portrait of the Brazilian boy Juri and probably also the portrait drawing of the girl Miranha are by Lutz. The children were brought to Europe from South America in 1820 and died soon after their arrival. They are also shown on a grave relief by Johann Baptist Stiglmaier . The portrait drawings are in the Bavarian State Library in Munich. Lutz apparently signed “P. Lutz ". Nagler mentions a lithograph of a “P. Lutz ”based on a painting by Alexander Maximilian Seitz , which depicts Saint Catherine carried to heaven by angels. A copy of the Robert Junius portrait by Cornelis Visscher was also made by P. Lutz. A steel engraving by P. Lutz after the Tyrolean von Bodmer is mentioned in 1870 in the Börsenblatt for the German book trade . Wolfgang Vomm mentions a drawing of an equestrian statue that P. Lutz made in 1830.

It is possible that Lutz also earned some of his money with drawing lessons: A P. Lutz, who ran a drawing school at Windenmachergasse 7, advertised several times in the press in Munich in the 19th century. In 1855 this P. Lutz had settled in Ruffinihaus No. 1 and continued to offer private drawing lessons, in 1856 he had changed his place of residence again.
