Gottlieb Bodmer (born May 5, 1804 in Hombrechtikon ; † July 18, 1837 in Munich ) was a German portrait painter and lithographer .

Life

Born in 1804 in Hombrechtikon and raised in Feldkirchen near Munich, he was enrolled in history painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1820 at the age of sixteen . After painting portraits under Stieler for several years , he switched to lithography in 1829 under Franz Xaver Winterhalter's guidance , which he gave a hitherto unknown turn through his treatment. From this time his lithograph of the Sistine Madonna (1829) became known.

After a stay in Paris in 1831, he further developed his technical system, which he carried out with skill and a painterly sense. In addition to numerous copies based on copperplate engravings, he devoted himself particularly to reproducing the paintings of the Munich School of that time. Other important works of this kind are those of King Otto's farewell to Philipp Foltz , King Ludwig I in his family circle after Dietrich Monten and Swiss Grenadier after Johann Baptist Kirner , which were widely used at the time .

His numerous portraits drawn directly from nature on stone are considered to be his best achievements.

An entire lithographic school emerged from his working method, which cemented Munich's reputation as the “lithographic capital of Germany”.

After his death at the age of only 33, he was buried in the Altes Südfriedhof in Munich in the grave location 6-1-43.
