Peter Meiwald (born March 31, 1966 in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). He was a member of the German Bundestag from 2013 to 2017 .

Life

Meiwald attended the college of St. Thomas the Dominicans in Vechta and, after completing community service, studied social pedagogy at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia , Münster department . He served the year of recognition in 1991/92 in a street children's center in Butare , in southern Rwanda . From 1993 he worked in refugee social work , from 1994 in youth welfare . Between 2001 and the election to the German Bundestag in 2013, he worked as a freelancer. He is head of the Africa / Middle East department at the Misereor Episcopal Aid Organization .

Political career

Meiwald has been involved in the DPSG since his youth and, among other things, was an honorary federal advisor for development issues from 1993 to 1996 . In 1998 he joined the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party. From 1999 to 2001 he was the local association spokesman and from 2001 to 2012 he was the district executive in the Ammerland district association . From 2009 to 2013 he was on the Lower Saxony party council of the Greens.

From 2003 to 2013 he was a councilor in the city of Westerstede . From 2011 to 2019 he was a member of the district council in the Ammerland district .

MP

He was elected to the German Bundestag in the 2013 federal election via the Lower Saxony state list . In his Bundestag constituency of Oldenburg - Ammerland he took third place with 18,552 first votes (11.5%). In the 18th Bundestag he was a full member of the Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety and the chairman of his parliamentary group and in the Petitions Committee of the German Bundestag . He was also a deputy member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development and the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Sustainable Development .
