Peter Nagel

Peter Carl Nagel (born April 3, 1938 in Erdmannsdorf ) is a German Protestant theologian , coptologist and religious historian .

After graduating from high school in 1956, Peter Nagel began studying Protestant theology, oriental studies and Egyptology at the University of Leipzig . In 1961 he passed the theological state examination and became a research assistant, from 1964 a lecturer at the Institute for Byzantine Studies at the University of Halle . In July 1961 he received his doctorate in theology with Johannes Leipoldt and Franz Lau on the subject of motivating asceticism in the old church , in September 1965 with Leipoldt and Siegfried Morenz for philology with the thesis investigations on the grammar of the subachmimic dialect . After the second doctorate he became senior assistant at the Institute for Byzantine Studies . In October 1967 he completed his habilitation in Halle with Otto Eißfeldt , Hans-Joachim Diesner , Johannes Irmscher and Kurt Rudolph on the subject of The Anti-Manichaean Writings of Titus von Bostra . Since September 1980, Nagel taught as an associate professor at the University of Halle. From 1988 to 1992 he was a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .

From 1993 until his retirement in 2003 he was professor for the science of the Christian Orient at the Oriental Department of the University of Bonn .

His research areas include in particular the Coptic and Syrian languages and their literatures, the New Testament Apocrypha , Gnosis and Manichaeism .
