Peter Nero (born on 22. May 1934 as Bernard Nierow in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American pianist and conductor , who in the field of jazz and easy listening became known.

Peter Nero was born as Bernard Nierow in 1934 in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City . He began taking music lessons at age seven and was accepted into New York's High School of Music and Art at 14 on a scholarship from the Juilliard School of Music .

In 1961 he recorded his first album as Peter Nero with Piano Forte and won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist the following year . In 1963 he won his second Grammy in the category Best Performance by an Orchestra or Instrumentalist with Orchestra for his album The Colorful Peter Nero . Together with his label RCA Records he recorded 23 albums, after which he switched to Columbia Records and released numerous other albums, including the title song and the soundtrack for the film Summer of '42 in 1973 .

At the age of 17, Nero had his first television success with his performance of the Gershwin opera Rhapsody in Blue on a television show by Paul Whiteman . In the course of his career he had numerous other appearances, including several times on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show by Johnny Carson . In addition to two Grammy wins and numerous nominations as well as several other awards, Peter Nero received numerous other honors for his work. He has received several honorary doctorates , the International Society of Performing Arts Presenters Award for “Excellence in the Arts”, the Lincoln Award and the Pennsylvania Distinguished Arts Award .
