Peter Rauchfuß (born October 25, 1944 , † July 16, 2016 in Chemnitz ) was a German handball referee and was a referee at the German Handball Federation until his death .

During his time as an active referee, Rauchfuß took part in four Olympic Games ( Montreal to Seoul ), five world championships and numerous European championships for the GDR . In total, he and his teammates Herbert Hensel and Rudolf Buchda whistled 326 international matches and almost 100 European Cup matches. In the latter, he whistled nine finals. The highlight of his active refereeing career was the 1988 Women's Olympic Final in Seoul, which he led with his teammate Rudolf Buchta.

In 1990 Peter Rauchfuß gave up his whistle, together with his colleagues built the GDR upper division club BSG Wismut Aue into a competitive professional handball club and helped found the German Handball League Association (HBL). When the German Handball Federation was looking for a successor to federal referee Willi Hackl in 2002, Peter Rauchfuß actually only wanted to help out for three months - which ultimately resulted in more than 13 years at the helm of the DHB referee.

Professionally, Rauchfuß, who lives in Chemnitz, worked as a PR and event manager in a brewery.

Peter Rauchfuß died on July 16, 2016 after a long and serious illness.
